Reno, baby

What's fun to do and where's fun to stay in Reno? We are a middle aged mom and young adult child; queers, nerds, enjoy history, fun facts, stuff that we won't see at home.

Road Trip Tampa to NYC - 5 days in June (difficulty: no major cities)

Please give me your suggestions of places to stop and spend anywhere between 2-6 hours, places to spend the night. We're looking for awesome nature, hiking with a view, picturesque areas. Cute unique towns are good too. No beaches unless there's unique nature stuff to explore. Happy to venture away from I95 and explore more inland than along the coast even if the drive takes longer. So if you have favorite places anywhere along the way, please suggest them. [more inside]

Woodsy, beautiful getaway within driving distance of Denver Airport?

My sister and I live on opposite ends of the country and want to meet halfway for a sisters weekend. We have very fond memories of Colorado from a long ago family vacation, and have booked our flights to Denver ... only to realize neither of us knows squat about the area. Also, due to schedule wackiness, we're going over the 4th of July weekend. Whoof! [more inside]

Where can I find abundant seaweed in or near New York City?

For an art project, I'd like to look at and photograph a lot of seaweed, and take home a bit of it. Where can I find abundant seaweed washing up on the beach in June, in or near New York City? Ideally accessible by public transit, but it doesn't have to be.

Watching beavers at work

Where, in the continental U.S., could one find a cabin or bed and breakfast on a river where it is a certainty one could watch beavers at work, either directly from the place or a short hike away? I do not want to disturb the beavers.

Californian insider info - When is Hwy1 likely to fully reopen?

We're planning a very exciting family trip from the UK to the US Pacific Coast in July-August this year. On the agenda is to drive down the PCH/Highway 1 from SF to LA stopping off in Big Sur and San Luis Obispo. But Hwy 1 is currently closed - is it safe to book accommodation now on the presumption it will reopen by August 2024? [more inside]

East side of Dallas eclipse viewing planning

A little late to the game here but I posted previously with a plan for plane travel but we came to Dallas by car instead. So, I need ideas for where to go on the East side of town to have a good view of the eclipse, and I need help figuring out how early to leave our hotel to get to that side of town to avoid being stuck on the interstate somewhere when the eclipse starts. We are staying at The Colony.

office or other quiet space with internet in Barre, VT Monday 4/8

A friend of mine is going to be in Barre, VT, on Monday for the eclipse, but he has to attend a virtual meeting (the final thesis defense of a student!) from 10-11:30am. He is hoping to find a corner of a non-profit or other space not too far from the historic district of Barre in exchange for donating to the organization. He is also happy to do the same for someone's living room. All he needs is a chair and some internet. We'll keep an eye on responses her, or you can memail me or email him at lmiratrix@g.harvard.edu. Many thanks for any hot tips!

How bad will cicadas be? West Loop/Greektown, Chicago, late May 2024

I made potential plans to celebrate an anniversary of sorts with my husband in Chicago at the end of May. I knew cicadas were coming this year, but as I live well out of the way of anywhere they would be, it wasn't in my mind until I saw a headline about two broods emerging simultaneously in Illinois around that time. So...is this going to be awful? [more inside]

Low-key mom's birthday events in DC

We'll be traveling from CA to Washington, DC, in a few days to meet my mother and stepfather, who'll be flying in from Massachusetts. The day after we arrive is my mother's birthday, and we'd like to celebrate it in a low-key, not-too-expensive way. But I'm stumped. [more inside]
