Baggage “baggage” - shipping excess from CA to NZ?

Hello - seeking recommendations please for sending a box/package (likely to be the size of a medium suitcase) from California to New Zealand. It won’t be possible to send it via an airline as excess baggage. Weight could be up to around 50 lbs/23 kg (of books, clothing, misc small household objects). Cost-effectiveness and reliability more important than speed of delivery.

Can you pack the books separately from the rest? The books can go via media mail, which is very inexpensive.

New Zealand post is HORRENDOUS. I have stopped sending things there in favour of buying from a shop inside the country for family members. Maybe from the US the cost is different, but also inside NZ, it takes so long for parcels to be received. I post to other countries, and NZ has become truly awful over the past 3 years for reliable post delivery in or out.

Chuck as much as you can and buy it there would be my advice.

I'm pretty sure that Media Mail rates are only for domestic mail.

The EasyShip website TWinbrook8 references includes a blog post on shipping from the USA to New Zealand, comparing several different services.

Best answer: The books can go via USPS M-bags.

I don't have any suggestions but totally disagree that the post is horrendous. The other day I bought something from the South Island (I'm in the North) on Sunday eve, and I received it Tuesday morn.

The main issue will be the cost. It's likely to cost a lot to send that much to NZ.
