Is the software industry seeing a fundamental shift?

Myself and others who I’d consider very senior have been wholesaled laid off. These aren’t lower level developers, though that’s happening, these are people who fundamentally or at least were part of teams that created the modern software SLDC. The question isn’t whether software engineering is going away but is it moving to lower cost of living areas because for most software the “hard” problems have been solved? Similar to textile manufacturing? [more inside]

Best Android tool for saving existing photo GPS metadata as EXIF tags?

Having discovered via this earlier question that the Camera app supplied with this Android phone saves photo location information somewhere outside the actual photo files, I now need a way to fix up existing photos so that they can be copied off the phone with their geotags included. [more inside]

Too-narrow grab regions on MacOS

Mac users: for me, edges and separators for resizing windows (especially vertical separators between panels, but often also the outer edges of ordinary windows) are frustratingly narrow in width and difficult to grab. I've tried TinkerTool but doesn't seem to make any difference. Are there any other apps, extensions, setting, or something that would make the grab edges/response regions wider? [more inside]

email link in PDF I made not working on PC

on a pdf created from INDD, I've added several link-outs to web pages, there are also a few email addresses. On my Mac, upon click, those emails set up an outgoing email populated with that email address in Mail. Client is saying when he clicks it (on a PC) "just opens a browser". Is there a method to making the email links work on a PC?

Course Building Follow Up: LMS allowing learner sign up with Twitter?

I’m building a business course for a client and looking for an LMS software recommendation. Following on from my most recent question, it would be very helpful if the course software would have students register / log on to take the course with their Twitter login. Suggestions gratefully received!

Help me with a verbally violent email thread?

I'm in the long address list of an email string that's trying to set up a dinner for an alumni event. I feel I need to stay on the thread because the same address list will be used again in the future, and because it might even contain pertinent messages about the dinner. However, some of the alumni feel that this is the forum to verbally attack each other for their ideas, or their agnosticism, about what people in the Middle East should or shouldn't do, and what the university officers should or shouldn't do. How do I create full environments on a single Fedora Silverblue machine?

This is a bit beyond my expertise with networking and certificate signing. I want to create a template that replicates a prod environment. Keeping this a bit abstract, I want to have a monorepo or polyrepo for dev, a way to test dev, push it into a private git repo, use build actions on pre-commit, then on post-commit run the equivalent of a "GitHub Action" to push the resulting OCI image to a private image repository, then eventually into a K8s cluster. It obviously doesn't have to be accessible outside my machine, but I'd like to add a host entry for each "workspace" using certs and a daemon for the various services to talk to each other. More details inside. [more inside]

How to pay in advance for a decade or more of webhosting?

So I have a budget for a project that will include a fairly uncomplicated website. The trick is that the state government appropriation for the project only runs another year, and I would like the website to be available for much longer. My idea is to use the project funds I have now to pay for at least a decade of hosting, maybe more. Where can I do that?

Looking for a list of legal terms for a speech to text dictionary

I have been using various speech to text tools in my legal practice (and personal life). Some of these tools allow you to upload a custom dictionary of words to improve accuracy. I'd like to upload a list of terms that are specific to U.S. legal practice, but I don't want the hard work of constructing that list myself. [more inside]
